A lovely upright and compact ornamental tree with great form, producing deep purple summer foliage that matures to maroon-crimson in fall; a great accent tree for smaller home landscapes because of its narrow form

Ornamental Features

Maple, (Norway) Crimson Sunset is primarily valued in the landscape for its decidedly oval form. It has attractive deep purple deciduous foliage. The lobed palmate leaves are highly ornamental and turn outstanding shades of crimson and burgundy in the fall.

Landscape Attributes

Maple, (Norway) Crimson Sunset is a deciduous tree with a shapely oval form. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Maple, (Norway) Crimson Sunset is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Accent
  • Mass Planting
  • Hedges/Screening

Planting & Growing

Maple, (Norway) Crimson Sunset will grow to be about 35 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 25 feet. It has a high canopy with a typical clearance of 6 feet from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. As it matures, the lower branches of this tree can be strategically removed to create a high enough canopy to support unobstructed human traffic underneath. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 60 years or more.

This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. This plant should be periodically fertilized throughout the active growing season with a specially-formulated acidic fertilizer. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid.

Special Attributes

Norway Maples seeds are called the samaras, commonly known as helicopters for their winged shape. The size of seeds are about 1 inch long.
